Mahaffey's Latest

Normally I'll simply summarize the email but this week as a special treat for those who aren't on the email list (sign up at the bar) I'll reproduce in entirety one of Wayne's emails. They're odd but a nice treat at the inbox every midweek.

Wow. June 30th. Time is flying. Went to a weding over the weekend with college buddies and realized that we are now the age that their parents were when we met. What happened? How long have the IHOP syrup dispensers been plastic? I was looking forward to the sliding metal lids. And how long has boysenberry syrup been gone? Where have I been? It's like I've slept for 20 years.Captain Jean-Luc Picard said, "Make now the most precious time. Because now will never come again." Amen. It is a common mistake for boys of your age and athletic ability to underestimate men who have reached their maturity. Women frequently find older men attractive, strange as it may seem. I myself am over fify. I am a bachelor. And I do not, by any means, consider myself th-r-ough.

Anybody hear of the Cardinal Climax? It's the alignment of several planets with Earth that peaks on 8/1 of this year. This alignment hasn't happened for probably 10,000 years and is expected to cause things to get really wacky just as people are affected by full moons. Stocks could plummet. Stuff is predicted to hit the fan. You heard it here first, folks.

Special bomber tonight: Rogue John John Juniper Ale, which is their regular Juniper pale ale aged in spruce gin barrels. Crazy. A little cucumberish, a big blast of juniper and an oaky finish makes this beer truly unique. About 6%. Can't go any lower than $14. A steal!!!!!!!!!

Good with 50 cent hot buffalo wings.

Big announcement: Mahaffey's will be closed from Saturday, 8/14 through Friday, 8/20. We will be re-opening on Saturday, 8/21 at 5PM.

The winner of last week's movie line trivia was Ben Morris, who correctly identified "48 Hours". I'll take correct anwer #5 this week. For all of you beer club rookies, I sneak in a line from a movie in these E-Mails. So, if you read something really bizarre, it's probably the movie quote. Then again...

If you aren't already, you really need to be on Mahaffey's email list, owner Wayne's sidebar rants in the emails are interesting and he rips off a good one this week about the animated Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer. Anyway.

The annual Winter Beer Tasting that was to be this Saturday has been cancelled.

Mahaffey's Update

Tonight's bomber at the great Mahaffey's in Canton is Stone's Double Bastard, $12/per, they only have 12 bottles so get there early. Also, $0.50 wings and $3 Holiday bottles tomorrow along with Happy Hour Seafood Extravaganza.

Doors open at noon on Sunday (beat the Colts!)

Finally, their annual winter beer tasting goes off December 5th at 1 PM, price will be in the $30 range, limited seating, more details to follow.

Today is Sierra Nevada during the day (Chico Estate bombers) and then Stone and Paulaner/Hacker Pschorr tonight (Stone 090909 and smoked porter bombers). Wings at $0.30 as well.

Tomorrow is Brooklyn then Troegs (Nugget Nectar!) and for Friday something called 'Boulders, Bombers and Bingo'. They've actually rented a bingo cage. Ahhh, Mahaffey's.

They're also planning a beer breakfast 'very soon' and expect a return of the Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA on draught soon.

1)Stone 090909 Vertical Epic (L) and Clipper City 'Great Pumpkin' on cask (R). Great Pumpkin wasn't bad but I definitely am not a pumpkin beer fan. Its not too over-the-top, which makes it suitable.

5)Gordon Biersch tap handle, new to Maryland bars! Pretty elaborate but it doesn't show well in the pic, delivered by a rep while I was there.

--- "Waynestock", celebrating Mahaffey's owner Wayne Mahaffey, goes off Saturday September 19th. More details when we get them.

--- Max's will host a one day Ciderfest this Tuesday July 28th at 6 PM. See the YFGF lnk for whats available. I missed last week's Christmas in July which per reports was a great success.

--- Reminder, Baltimore Beer Week will be from October 8th-18th. See website, twitter account for more info but the basics:

Opening tap event aboard the USS Constellation (cool!), Maryland Oktoberfest and The Chesapeake Real Ale Festival.

--- The Bowie Baysox have been hosting several beer dinner events this season. Their 4th such event will be on Thursday August 13th from 6-9 PM. It will be called "OctoBEERfest", sponsored by Spaten. For $41 ($27 without beverages) you get access for two hours to an all you can eat buffet, a three-hours all you can drink event, a ticket to the game against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats and free parking "from the ease and comfort of a luxury suite".

The dinner will include salad, assorted hors d'oeuvres, german style sausage and apple bake, grilled pork loin with mushroom bier sauce, cheese pasta with spinach and nutmeg, braised cabbage, roasted summer vegetables, and german chocolate brownies and strawberries.

On tap will be draft Spaten Oktoberfest, Spaten Munich Dunkel, Spaten Optimator, Franziskaner Dunkel Weiss and Spaten Lager.

Tickets must be purchased by 3 PM on August 11th.

Also, their fourth and final beer event will be on September third, more details as they arrive.

--- The excellent SoYeahDood has pieced together a Baltimore based homebrew club of sorts, looks kind of cool, its called "Baltibrew". Their next meetup is at 630 PM on

--- Looney's North is running its annual "kiss-a-pig" competition, purchase a pig for $1 which goes to support youth development programs with the Boys & Girls Clubs in Harford County. Pigs can be purchased now through August 20th, where the kissing occurs during the Ironbirds' game at Ripken Stadium.

--- Looks like we missed Belgian Independence Day last week. Bummer, a nod in the direction of the Belgian people and particularly their master brewers that keep us beer nerds inspired.

--- The Society for the Preservation of Beer from Wood (SPBW) is having its annual bus trip on Saturday August 8th. They'll leave the Timonium Fairgrounds park-n-ride at 930 AM before heading to Stoudts, Victory and Sly Fox. Price is $30 for the ride on the luxury coach with a small buffet on the last leg at Sly Fox. Open to all.

They'll also host a crab feast at Goddard Space Flight Center Rec Center on Saturday September 19th. It includes all you can eat steamed crabs, BBQ chicken, pulled pork, burgers, dogs, coleslaw, desserts, cask ale, sodas, water, with games for adults and kids. Price is $35 for adults, $10 for 7-13 year old kids, free for those six and under. Bring homebrewed beer (they'll take care of the ice), a mallet or crab picking knife and yourself.
