Howard County Help

A reader sent me an email the other day, they're new to the area, just moved to Ellicott City.

They're interested in homebrewing clubs in the area (particularly ones that get together to drink good beer, he has some good stuff in his cellar he'd hate to drink alone). Can anyone help on this? I'm not really too familiar with the homebrew clubs, I know there are several out there but not sure how they sort themselves out geographically and whatnot.

Thanks.

Hello from a fellow homebrewer in Ellicott City.

I'm given to understand that Maryland has a somewhat unique structure when it comes to Homebrew clubs. We have a statewide umbrella club under which the other individual clubs can get together. The really good thing is that it lists all of the local clubs. http://www.mdhomebrewers.org/

Personally with 2 small kids I just don't have the time right now to start going to a homebrew club. My free time is spent brewing about once a month or two. However, having said that the "closest" one to Ellicott City is the Killer Ales.

You could also touch base with the folks at Maryland Home Brew in Columbia http://www.mdhb.com

I live in Howard County and am the President Chesapeake Real Ale Brewers Society (CRABS) and we are part of the Free State Homebrwers Guild. We meet on the third Wednesday of the month at the tasting room of Clipper City @7:30. Our group is made up of a wide range of professions and ages of men and women. You can take a look at our website www.crabsbrew.org or just come by a meeting and see if it is for you.

Also I would encourage anyone with an interest in home brewing to attend the home brew demonstration to be held @ The Pratt Street Ale House on the final day of Baltimore Beer Week (Sun. Oct. 18th, from about 9am). It should be a good opportunity to meet like minded home brew enthusiasts.
